John received his private pilot’s license in 1973 from one of the last WWII US Navy Chief Airplane pilots (enlisted rating), while serving his enlistment with the Naval Reserve in Glenview, IL. Except for a 10 year hiatus while he pursued other interests such as endurance bicycle riding and sports car racing, he has since accumulated more than 3500 hours, 600 in gliders.

John retired to St. George from San Diego after a 35 year career in marketing and sales of electronic components. “This is a great opportunity”, he says. “After working hard for 35 years at something I didn’t like doing, I at least put enough away to retire early and do something I really do like to do!” John owns a Maule M7-235 aircraft which he uses for glider towing at regional and national glider competitions during the summer. He is also an Angel Flight mission pilot and flies a Dornier 328 jet part time charter for Vision Airlines in North Las Vegas.

John has a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign, IL, and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He and his wife, Barbara, reside in Washington UT with their Basset hound, Huckleberry – who also loves to fly.

Lee Caldwell

Lee Caldwell:

Single Engine Land (SEL) Commercial Pilot, SEL Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI), CFI –Instrument Airplane.

Lee served as an Air Transport Navigator in C 130s the USAF from 1972 to 1975 and spent 18 months flying combat missions in Southeast Asia. A late blooming pilot, he earned his pilot’s license in 2001 at age 53 and his commercial pilot's license and CFI ticket in 2002. He has instructed in Boise, Idaho; Atlanta, Georgia; and in St. George. He has 1,100 hours as a pilot and 900 hours as a navigator. He is currently a mission pilot and check pilot for Civil Air Patrol.

Lee moved to St. George in 2004 and served as academic vice president and president of Dixie State College of Utah until 2008. He has held vice president's positions with IBM and Hewlett-Packard, was an executive at Novell, Inc. and Unisys. He was also associate vice president of Indiana University, a professor and administrator at Sam Houston State University, the University of Utah and Georgia Tech. He earned a PhD in Strategic Management from Texas A&M University, a JD from BYU and a BA in Management from Utah State University. He also did graduate work at the University of Southern California. He and his wife Bonnie have two children and one grandchild.
